A new palm trunk from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentina Ameghiniana
Ottone,Eduardo G..
A new morphospecies of palm trunk, Palmoxylon pichaihuensis sp. nov., is proposed on the basis of several specimens recovered from a succession of tuffs and breccias at Pichaihue, Neuquén Province, Argentina. The specimens comprise atactosteles that display densely crowded fibrovascular bundles in the peripheral zone, and less congested fibrovascular bundles, randomly scattered or arranged in irregular circles in the central zone; sclerenchyma reniform; xylem with 1-4 large metaxylem vessels and 6-12 smaller protoxylem elements in the central zone, and an f/v ratio of 1.3-2:1. The Pichaihue fossil assemblage is similar to, and probably coeval with the flora of Bajo de Santa Rosa, Río Negro Province, reflecting a warm and relatively humid climate, at ca....

Fruit biometry and seed germination of Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassm Acta Botanica
Goudel,Flora; Shibata,Marília; Coelho,Cileide Maria Medeiros; Miller,Paul Richard Momsen.
Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassm. is a species native to Brazil that is of ecological and aesthetic importance. This study aims to describe the biometric characteristics of S. romanzoffiana fruits and to assess the effects that treatments meant to overcome dormancy and partial drying have on seed germination. For biometric characterization, each repetition consisted of 50 fruits from eight clusters (total, 400 fruits). To evaluate methods for overcoming dormancy, seeds representative of populations were treated by perforation of the operculum; perforation of the operculum and immersion in water for 24 hours; cracking; exposure to fire for three minutes; and non-removal of fibers. There was also a control group. In a second experiment, seeds were...

Increased atmospheric CO2 changes the photosynthetic responses of Acrocomia aculeata (Arecaceae) to drought Acta Botanica
Rosa,Bruno Luan; Souza,João Paulo; Pereira,Eduardo Gusmão.
ABSTRACT Water availability is the main factor that explains current patterns of palm abundance. However, the interaction between water stress and increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations caused by climatic change and its effects on palm physiology remain poorly known. Macauba palm is a widespread Neotropical species commonly found in ecosystems subjected to seasonal drought and has potential use in oil production. The present work investigated the influence of increased CO2 concentrations on photosynthetic responses to drought in macauba palm plants. Exposure to increased CO2 concentrations led to up-regulation of photosynthesis through higher stomatal conductance and improved light and water use efficiency. Macauba palm plants under water stress,...

Local extinction of an important seed disperser does not modify the spatial distribution of the endemic palm Astrocaryum aculeatissimum (Schott) Burret (Arecaceae) Acta Botanica
Zucaratto,Rodrigo; Pires,Alexandra dos Santos.
Spatial pattern of the palm Astrocaryum aculeatissimum was investigated in an urban Atlantic Forest fragment (Tijuca National Park, Brazil) where its main seed disperser, the red-rumped agouti Dasyprocta leporina, is locally extinct. A 120 × 130 m plot (1.56 ha) was established in which all A. aculeatissimum individuals were quantified, georeferenced, and classified by ontogenetic stages, namely, seedling, infant, juvenile, immature individual, and adult. Analyses were performed using Ripley's K function. We recorded 376 individuals, most of which were in the juvenile stage (n = 228). The spatial pattern was aggregated as observed for other palm species. Seedlings and infants were not associated with adults, whereas juveniles and immature individuals were...

Planting coconuts in Indian villages: ethnoecological aspects and evaluation of a "sustainable development" project Biota Neotropica
Salm,Rodolfo; Feder,Lisa; Jalles-Filho,Euphly; Jardim,Mario Augusto Gonçalves.
Although scientists and policy makers embrace the general concept "sustainable development", there are few who agree on how to carry out sustainable development in specific situations. As such, sustainable development projects among ethnoscientists are widely critiqued as to how well they are inter-culturally formulated. Here we report on a controversial case of planting coconuts in Kayapó Indian villages of southern Pará, Brazil and offer our own self-critique. We began under the premise that reforestation and Kayapó general health/nutrition go hand in hand. Therefore, the flourishing of coconut culture will contribute to forest conservation in the long run, in itself, and simultaneously, maintain good nutrition for the Kayapó people who protect the...

Giraldo Montoya, Sebastián; Motoike, Sergio Yoshimitsu; Kuki, Kacilda Naomi; de Oliveira, Cleber Macedo; Gomes Honorio, Isabela Cristina.
The objective of this work was to identify the species of beetles present in a macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd) native population as well as describe their activities, for further study of plant- insect interaction. Adult fruit weevils and brown beetles were collected manually in the fruits and the leaflets of adult plants of macaw palms. The insects were associated with the premature fruits abortion and with the reduction of the photosynthetic area of the plants.

Soil oribatid mite in four typical vegetation communities of Misiones forest in the Iguazú area, Argentina PAB
Martínez,Pablo Antonio; Fredes,Natalia Andrea; Montti,Lia Fernanda; Casertano,Sergio Alejandro.
The objective of this work was to assess the soil oribatid mite communities in four sites of the Upper Paraná Bosque Atlántico, in the Iguazú National Park, Argentina and in surrounding areas: bamboo forest, palm forest and two mixed forests. A comparison between each pair of sites, based on the presence-absence of oribatid species, was performed using Jaccard's index. This is the first systematic sampling of oribatid mites in this area. A total of 56 genera and 96 oribatid species were found, 25 and 49 of them, respectively, are new citation for Argentina. The highest similarity was found between mixed forests. Almost 68% and 34% of the genera were cited for similar biotopes in Brazil and Paraguay, respectively.

Using ecological niche models to predict the impact of global climate change on the geographical distribution and productivity of Euterpe oleracea Mart. (Arecaceae) in the Amazon Acta Botanica
Vaz,Úrsula Lopes; Nabout,João Carlos.
ABSTRACT We assess the impact of climate change on the geographic distribution and productivity of Euterpe oleracea (Arecaceae), commonly called açaí. To construct the ecological niche model of E. oleracea, we used 95 points of occurrence, five bioclimatic variables in current and future climate scenarios and Maxent software. The Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) was used to rank the ability of the models (considering ecological, socioeconomic and spatial variables) to explain the variation in productivity of E. oleracea among 200 municipalities. The maps showed that regions with higher environmental suitability for E. oleracea were concentrated in northern and northeastern Brazil, which was similar to the spatial pattern of productivity data of E....
